Nyack tries new twist on downtown parking: 15 minutes for free

NYACK – Parking: Everyone needs it, but no one wants to pay for it.

Nyack officials constantly hear complaints from residents and visitors about downtown parking … although the village has on-street parking and three parking lots right on Main Street. And, of course, there are plenty opinions on parking tickets.

In an effort to alleviate concerns and complaints about parking, Nyack is trying a new strategy to manage its downtown parking: Free parking for 15 minutes.

In the “Free 15” strategy, Nyack Mayor Jen Laird-White said the village’s munimeters will issue printed tickets for 15 minutes of free parking just by pushing a button.

White said the effort is designed to let people who truly need to make a quick trip to a local business do so without having to “feed the meter.”

How does it work: Just push the green “pay now” button on a munimeter and a free ticket will print out. Next, place the ticket on the dashboard of your car so it can be seen by village parking enforcement officers. For the free 15 minutes, you don’t have to put any money in the munimeter.

However, if you need to stay longer, you do need to buy parking.
