Through history and genealogy, this program considers how stories are preserved, how they are lost, and how we begin to reclaim them—tracing family histories and piecing together lives not fully recorded.  Participants will learn more about approaches to working with traditional records while also moving beyond them in the search for Black family histories.  Register today!

Vladimir Caamano is a standup comedian and actor best known for his recurring roles on NBC’s Superstore and MARVEL’S Runaways on Hulu as well as the CBS police drama TOMMY starring opposite Edie Falco. A native of the Bronx, NY, Vladimir graduated from Wesleyan University and turned his sights on standup comedy immediately after. The Bronx along side Chris Redd, Shea Wingham, Zoey Saldana and produced by Lorne Michaels and directed by Oz Rodriguez. Vladimir can also be heard as the voice of Synth in the Hulu/Peacock series Trolls.

Let’s Drink Tea and Talk about Death

On Wednesday, June 24th, at 6 pm, The Open Door Death Cafe will meet at the Suffern Free Library. This gathering provides a comfortable atmosphere in which we can share respectful, open, heartfelt, and thought-provoking conversations on the topics of death, dying, grief, and loss.

Join us in this safe space for sharing beliefs, questions, and curiosities, learning, and connecting with others. We’ll enjoy delicious tea, cake, and conversation. We will go wherever the conversation takes us.

Developed in 2011,  Death Cafes  have proliferated worldwide, offering a moderated discussion without a predetermined agenda or theme. A Death Café is not a grief support nor counseling session but a space for normalizing conversation that deepens our awareness about death. Cafés can help us to make the most of our finite lives.

The event will be hosted by Jill Greenbaum, death educator, expressive arts grief coach, and

DMV Unveils Special Edition 250th License

Twelve score and 10 years ago, our founders brought forth a new nation.

To celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is bringing forth a new plate to mark the historic occasion.

The custom plate features an image of the United States, stars and proclaims “United States of America 250” across the bottom. It was unveiled Tuesday at Peebles Island State Park outside Albany and is available to order on the DMV’s website and at all DMV offices across New York State.

“We are delighted to offer this plate to the public as the nation proudly celebrates its 250th anniversary,” said DMV Acting Commissioner Christian Jackstadt. “It is a great way for New Yorkers to display their love of country and express their appreciation for all America has to offer.”

The specialty plate costs $60 upon initial purchase. There is an annual renewal fee of $31.25, in addition to the normal registration renewal costs.

The plate will be offered for passenger class vehicles only. For an additional fee, customers can personalize their plate by ordering specific letter and number combinations with up to 6 characters.

The plate can be issued with the symbol of access, with up to 5 characters.

Seriously Simple

As I write my 1,000th column, I am reminded of the most wonderful bites/tastes I have experienced. This recipe for gougères is the perfect one to celebrate, and it was included in a fun new book — “Retro Recipes” by Bobby Hicks — that landed on my desk recently.

Imagine other dishes like vinegar pie, tomato aspic, biscuits, chicken divan and those famous Jello salads from long ago. “Retro Recipes: Vintage Dishes with a Modern Twist” is a modern cook’s love letter to the past.

These cheesy puffs became popular in the 1960s. They are made from choux pastry (pronounced “shoe”) combined with shredded nutty Gruyere cheese, piped out on a baking sheet and baked until they become golden brown puffy gems of deliciousness. I have served these as we sip cocktails or even as a surprise as we begin the meal. They are so good. Try to time these coming out of the oven as your guests have arrived so they can be served hot.

I’ve simplified the recipe to make it easy to follow. While most versions use a wire whisk to combine the ingredients, I find an electric hand mixer works better because it blends the dough more smoothly. Give these a try when you have time to practice your pastry skills, and watch your guests delight in these airy cheese puffs.

Gougères (Cheese Puffs)

Makes about two dozen

1 cup water

6 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 cup all–purpose flour

3/4 teaspoon salt

4 large eggs

2 cups shredded Gruyere or mild cheddar cheese

2 large egg yolks, for egg wash

1. Preheat the oven to 425 F with a rack in the middle position. Place parchment paper on two sheet pans.

2. In a medium saucepan, heat the water and butter over medium heat until the butter is melted. Add the flour and salt and cook, stirring with a spatula, until a dough forms and a skin begins to appear on the bottom of the pot. Remove from the heat and allow to cool for a couple minutes.

3. Using an electric mixer, beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. The batter may look separated at first, but continue mixing until smooth before adding each egg. Mix in the cheese, until completely blended.

4. Spoon or pipe the dough onto the parchment-lined sheet pans in 1 1/2-inch rounds, spacing them two to three inches apart. (Don’t stress if you don’t have a pastry bag. Use a tablespoon or small scooper instead.) Beat the egg yolks to make an egg wash, then brush it over the tops and sides. Bake for about 25 minutes, or until the puffs are golden brown. Let cool for about 15 minutes to crisp slightly, then serve warm.

Recipe notes: Once completely cooled, you can store the gougères in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days, or refrigerate for up to five days. Warm them back up in a 350 F oven for 5 to 10 minutes before serving.

13th Annual Anthony Amoros Mmeorial Car Show

 

On Saturday, July 11th from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., come by the 13th Annual Memorial Car Show for Anthony Amoros at North Rockland High School.

Rain date is scheduled for Sunday, July 12th.

Cars are $30 and vendors are charged $30 to appear. For people visiting, admission is free and includes live music.

There will also be food for sale, raffles, trophies, and prizes.

Donations can be sent to Anthony Amoros Memrial Scholarship Fund to North Rockland High School. PO Box 188 Thiells, NY 10984.

All donations are tax deducttible and fund the Anthony Amoros Memorial Scholarship for a student enrolled at North Rockland High School.
