Grand Reopening of the Walton Gould Children’s Park
Mark your calendar for Saturday, July 18, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM at 5 Fred Hecht Drive for the Grand Reopening of Walton Gould’s Children’s Park in Spring Valley.
Thanks to funding awarded through the CREST Grant, the Village of Spring Valley was able to install new playground equipment, creating a safer and more enjoyable place for children and families to gather just in time for the summer. This is an important first step in the town’s continued investment in the park. While these improvements are exciting, the Village is committed to enhancing the park even further in the future through additional upgrades and amenities.
This celebration is about more than reopening a playground—it’s an opportunity for the community to come together and honor the legacy of Walter Gould, whose name this park proudly carries. For generations, this park has been a place where children have played, families have gathered, and neighbors have connected. The Village of Spring Valley hopes you’ll join them as they celebrate its next chapter and remember the individual whose legacy continues to bring the community together.

Every July, we celebrate Independent Retailer Month, a time to recognize the locally owned businesses that help define our communities and keep our local economies strong.
Whether it’s the neighborhood hardware store, the family-owned bakery, the independent bookstore or the corner pharmacy, these businesses are much more than places to shop. They’re owned by our neighbors, employ local residents and often give back to the schools, charities and community organizations that make our towns special.
When you choose to shop at an independent retailer, your dollars stay close to home. They help create local jobs, support families and strengthen the economic foundation of our communities. Many small business owners sponsor youth sports teams, donate to local fundraisers and volunteer their time because they are invested in the places where they live and work.
Running a small business, however, has never been easy. Independent retailers continue to face rising costs for rent, utilities, insurance, inventory and labor. They compete not only with large national chains, but also with online retailers that can often offer lower prices and faster delivery. Despite these challenges, they continue to open their doors every morning, serve their customers with pride and provide the personalized service that simply can’t be replicated by a website.
As lawmakers, we should be working to make it easier, not harder, as Albany often does, for these businesses to succeed. That means cutting unnecessary regulations, reducing burdensome mandates and creating an economic environment where entrepreneurs can grow, hire and invest with confidence. Small businesses don’t ask for special treatment. They simply want a fair opportunity to compete and thrive.
Independent Retailer Month is a reminder that every purchase is also an investment in the future of our communities. While convenience often plays a role in where we shop, choosing a local business whenever possible can have a lasting impact on the people and neighborhoods we care about most.
This month, I encourage everyone to stop into a locally owned store, meet the people behind the counter and discover what makes their business unique. A single purchase may seem small, but together those choices help preserve the character of our hometowns and ensure our local businesses remain part of our communities for generations to come.
Our independent retailers have spent years investing in us. This July, let’s return the favor by investing in them.

Provencal Tomato Galette

When it comes to the dough, if you aren’t a pastry person, feel free to use a store-bought fresh pie dough and then roll it out into a 13-inch round. I like to use a removable springform disc or removable tart pan bottom to center the galette and help remove it from the baking sheet pan easily. If you are making your own pie dough (which really is seriously simple) look for unbleached pastry flour, which has less gluten than all-purpose flour and will develop a very flakey crust. I added a touch of cornmeal to the dough to give it a bit of texture, but don’t worry if you decide to use store-bought pie dough.
Once the dough is rolled out, it is brushed with Dijon mustard and sprinkled with Parmesan cheese to keep the bottom from getting soggy. The sauteed multi-color cherry tomato mixture is spooned into the center of the dough, then the pastry edges are folded around the filling, making pleats around the galette.
When the pie is golden brown and slightly cooled, I add bits of cheese on top to give an extra layer of flavor. If you want, you can drizzle some balsamic syrup on top. Either way, this is truly a winning dish that is Seriously Simple to put together.
Serve this galette on the side of any grilled meat, chicken or fish. I have also served it as a main course with an arugula salad alongside for lunch or dinner. A glass of chilled rose would be a lovely accompaniment.
Provencal Tomato Galette
Serves 6
For the pastry:
3 tablespoons cornmeal
1 1/4 cup all-purpose or pastry flour
Good pinch salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) frozen unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
1/4 cup ice water
For the filling:
1 pound yellow and red (heirloom if possible) cherry tomatoes, halved
2 teaspoons salt
1 garlic clove, peeled and minced
3 tablespoons finely shredded fresh basil
1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves, chopped
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
To finish the galette:
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
2 tablespoons freshly grated Parmesan cheese
1 egg, well beaten, to brush pastry
Sprigs fresh thyme
2 ounces fresh mozzarella, burrata or goat cheese, cut into small pieces or crumbled
1. Prepare the pastry. Place the cornmeal, flour, and salt in a food processor and process for about 5 seconds. Add the butter and a few tablespoons of water and process until you have a crumb-like texture, about 5-10 seconds. Pat the dough into a round disc form for easy rolling. Refrigerate for 1 hour.
2. Place a 9- to 10-inch diameter removable bottom disc of a springform or removable tart pan on a parchment-lined heavy baking sheet with a rim. (You won’t need the sides of the springform or tart pan for this freeform tart.) On a floured surface roll out the pastry into a 13-inch diameter round. Roll the pastry back onto the rolling pin and transfer it to the tart bottom round, laying the dough flat to cover the round with a 3- inch border overlap all around on the baking sheet. Refrigerate while making the filling.
3. Preheat oven to 425 F.
4. Combine the tomatoes and salt in a medium bowl and mix. Let sit for 15 minutes to release excess tomato juice. Drain tomatoes in a colander and return to bowl. Add the rest of the filling ingredients and mix well so everything is nicely coated.
5. Remove the rolled pastry. Spread the Dijon mustard evenly on the pastry round and then sprinkle with Parmesan. Spoon the tomato mixture in the center on top of mustard coating.
6. Fold about 3 inches of the pastry edges up around the tomato mixture, making pleats, to look like a free-form tart. Brush the pastry with egg wash. Bake in the middle rack of the oven for 35 to 40 minutes or until golden brown.
7. Remove from oven, cool slightly, garnish with thyme sprigs and then carefully place the cheese pieces on the tomato mixture. Cut into slices and serve.

Karen Ranucci is an Emmy Award-winning investigative reporter and videographer. She has worked in independent video and film production for the last 50 years, beginning at Downtown Community TV Center in New York. Karen worked as a freelance correspondent for the NBC Nightly News and Today Show, and in 198,5 she won a National Emmy for “Best Investigative Reporting” for a series she developed about workers being poisoned in the tungsten carbide industry. She founded the Latin American Video Archives to distribute Latin American-made films and videos to the US educational market. In the days following September 11, 2001, Karen joined the Democracy Now! team, where she worked for over a decade in various positions, transforming this beloved radio program into a simultaneous radio, TV, and internet broadcast seen by millions around the globe.
Tina Traster, discussion moderator
Tina Traster is a socially-conscious award-winning journalist, author, and filmmaker. She is also the Editor and Publisher of a local independent news site in New York. Prior to founding Rockland County Business Journal in 2018, Traster, a 40-year industry veteran, worked for the Bergen Record (now NJ.com). She became an independent journalist in 1999, contributing to scores of newspapers and magazines, including The New York Times, The New York Post, Huffington Post, The Daily Beast, The Atlantic, The Journal News, Nyack News & Views, and more. She is also the award-winning author of Rescuing Julia Twice and director of several documentaries including Catnip Nation, and most recently, The Story of Us.
Suzanne Barclay, discussion guest
As a planner, Suzanne Barclay worked in county and state government and non-profits on land use, environmental issues, and public housing issues. Since retiring from Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rockland, Suzanne has focused on addressing plastic pollution as a volunteer with Beyond Plastic and on defending our democracy as co-president of the League of Women Voters. This Administration’s daily attempts to dismantle our democracy has helped sharpen her focus.
