Five Towns of Rockland Blood Drive Competition
Senator Weber is hosting his annual Blood Drive Challenge where each of the 5 Towns of Rockland takes part in a friendly competition to collect the most units of blood and to get the most first-time blood donors. The event includes 5 blood drives over 5 consecutive days in each of the 5 towns of Rockland. The winner of each contest gets a trophy and bragging rights. The Senator’s office will also have the Tappan Zee Bridge lit up Red the night of the first blood drive. This will be their third year hosting the event, and since the summer months are typically when the need for blood donations is at their highest, every bit particapant is greatly appreciated.

ReScheduled Grand Reopening of the Walton Gould Children’s Park
Due to anticipated inclement weather and rain forecasted for this weekend, the Village of Spring Valley has made the decision to reschedule the Walton Gould Children’s Park Grand Reopening to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.
New Event Date: Saturday, August 1, 2026

Location: Walton Gould Children’s Park, 5 Fred Hecht Drive, Spring Valley, NY
Thanks to funding awarded through the CREST Grant, the Village of Spring Valley was able to install new playground equipment, creating a safer and more enjoyable place for children and families to gather just in time for the summer. This is an important first step in the town’s continued investment in the park. While these improvements are exciting, the Village is committed to enhancing the park even further in the future through additional upgrades and amenities.
This celebration is about more than reopening a playground—it’s an opportunity for the community to come together and honor the legacy of Walter Gould, whose name this park proudly carries. For generations, this park has been a place where children have played, families have gathered, and neighbors have connected. The Village of Spring Valley hopes you’ll join them as they celebrate its next chapter and remember the individual whose legacy continues to bring the community together.

The Jazz Ambassadors: A Cello Show with Alex Prizgintas
More than simply providing a concert, the cello is the vehicle that delivers something so very unique. “You see a musician sitting with a cello, and you may immediately think ‘classical music,’ except this is so much more,” according to Alex Prizgintas, who, together with his cello, guitar pedals, and looping station, is an uncommon troubadour. “We give a show and not a concert, and that show is driven by the topic,” explains Alex. “With the Jazz Ambassadors, my off-stage narrator and I tackle the complicated topic of jazz musicians employed by the State Department to counter Russian propaganda about America’s racism. While a diverse mix of American Jazz musicians toured a variety of countries across Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and Latin America, challenging the veracity of Russia’s racist accusations, black students back home in America were being sent to school accompanied by armed guards in states such as Arkansas. There was a disconnect, and this show provides context and content along with some engaging conversation.
“The Jazz Ambassadors” will be shown by the Ardsley Library on Saturday, August 1st, at 2:00 PM. It is the latest in a series of shows offered by Prizgintas under the banner of “Uber Arts: Delivering Food for the Soul,” which all seek to convey a message of openness and inclusiveness along with a level of engagement. “First and foremost, we are entertainers,” claims Alex. “But as entertainers, we seek to understand ourselves and the world around us better. Most often, cellists play concerts. I’m a little different in that I try to give a show.” Alex works to give a “show” that offers more give-and-take with the audience while delivering bits of information revealing some of the background behind the melodies and the melody makers. In these shows, not only do I gather music but also reinterpret it with tools such as a looping station, guitar effect pedals, a mixer, and an amp, and share it in a format that is part drama, part concert, a bit of storytelling, and mostly a show.

Pascack Valley Venom Hosting Free Tryouts
Pascack Valley Venom is a three-time championship-winning Club Baseball team of 12-year old boys from the Greater Pascack Valley Region, with multiple players from Hillsdale, and their Manager is from Old Tappan.

Need a light dessert for summer? Try wine-poached peaches

It’s summer, and I prefer delicious desserts that don’t cause me to spend the day in the kitchen. That said, poached fruit compotes are always welcome at the end of a summer meal. And cooks and guests alike often prefer a light dessert in these hot months.
This recipe was created when my first crop of Babcock peaches turned out to be larger than I ever imagined. The Babcock peach is different from the others because of its creamy white fruit. You can also use yellow peaches, but note that Babcock peaches cook faster than other peach varieties. I’ve given you the blanch method to remove the peach skin, but if you have serrated peeler, you can skip that step and peel them easily. The serrated peeler blade makes it Seriously Simple.
You can have fun selecting your favorite sweet wine for this recipe. I’ve used other wines like riesling and gewurztraminer, which each offer their own unique flavor. You can also poach the peaches whole. Increase your cooking time slightly, and make sure to serve with a knife and fork since the pit has not been removed. A dollop of whipped cream, vanilla ice cream or raspberry sauce is lovely spooned on top of the poached peach halves. Serve these in your largest wine glasses, and add a sprig of mint for a pretty presentation.
Wine Poached Peaches
Serves 6
6 medium Babcock or other variety of peaches, slightly firm
3 cups white zinfandel
1 cup sugar
2 cinnamon sticks
10 fresh mint leaves, plus more for garnish
Whipped cream, vanilla ice cream or raspberry sauce, optional topping
1. In a large saucepan bring water to boil. Immerse peaches in water for about 20 seconds and then remove immediately. (Or use a serrated peeler and skip this step.)
2. Peel peaches and then cut peaches in half. Remove pit in center of each peach.
3. In a large non‑aluminum Dutch oven or heat-proof casserole combine wine, sugar, cinnamon sticks and mint. Over medium heat bring syrup to a simmer, making sure that sugar is dissolved.
4. Add peach halves carefully. Cover and poach about 10 minutes or until peaches are cooked but still have slight resistance. (Timing will depend on the ripeness and size of the peaches). Turn peaches at least once to obtain even color.
5. Remove peaches from syrup, place in a glass bowl and cool. Cool syrup, remove mint leaves and then drizzle about 2 cups syrup over peaches.
6. To serve, arrange two peach halves in individual glass bowls. Pour over a tablespoon or so of syrup and then spoon on some whipped cream, vanilla ice cream or raspberry sauce. Garnish with fresh mint leaves.
Make ahead: This may be prepared 8 hours in advance through Step 6 and kept in the refrigerator.Serve immediately.

Local Author Book Signing in Barnes & Noble
Shari Pierce, Valley Cottage resident, worked as a special education teacher for the Yonkers Public Schools for 33 years. Pierce retired five years ago, then wrote a book for parents and teachers of the intellectually disabled kids.
Pierce is having her very first book signing at the Palisades Mall’s Barnes & Noble August 9th at 2:00 p.m.
This book is a practical guide written for parents, educators, and all those whose lives are touched by those with intellectual disabilities. Raising and teaching children with disabilities can be joyful.. and challenging, and this book offers ideas, suggestions and actionable advice on all sorts of topics for families and teachers. There are chapters on everything from preparing for Open School Night to fun and safe ways to allow children to help in the kitchen, dealing with tantrums, individualizing instruction in the classroom, and much more! There is also a section that serves as a curriculum and activity guide. This section is unique in that not only gives ideas for teaching and practicing skills, but it also explains the “how” and “why” of instruction, allowing you to learn optimal ways to teach a skill and what the barriers to successful understanding may be.
Inspiration for this book comes from my thirty-three years as a special educator for the Yonkers Public Schools as well as being the sibling of an adult with developmental disabilites. After my retirement, I felt that my years of experience could benefit others. There seemed to be such a need for specific guidance and resources for families and school personnel who were raising and educating children with intellectual disabilities. Also, through the years, many of my students and their families were Spanish speaking or bilingual and I noticed a particular need for such resources in Spanish. With that in mind, I released a translation of my book in Spanish so that even more people can have the tools they need to help their child succeed!
