Pearl River Cub Scouts Host Bike Rodeo

Cub Scout Pack 2036 recently held a high-energy Bike Rodeo at Central Ave Field Park in Pearl River, giving Scouts the opportunity to build confidence, improve bike handling skills, and learn important bicycle safety habits in a fun, hands-on setting.

The event welcomed Cub Scouts from Good Shepherd Lutheran Church as well as visiting Girl Scouts Troop 40338 from Lincoln Avenue Elementary School in Pearl River. Participants rotated through a series of stations designed to reinforce safe riding techniques and develop practical cycling skills.

The evening began with helmet checks and the ABC Bike Check—teaching Scouts how to inspect their bikes by checking Air, Brakes, and Chain before every ride. Scouts then navigated obstacle courses, practiced balance and control, learned proper hand signals, and demonstrated safe stopping techniques. These activities helped riders of all skill levels gain confidence while emphasizing real-world safety habits.

“The Bike Rodeo is one of those events where the Scouts are having so much fun, they don’t even realize they’re learning,” said a Pack 2036 leader. “Kids need opportunities to put down their screens, get outside, and simply enjoy being kids.”

High fives all around!

A unique feature of the event was the use of a modified bicycle with the pedals removed, allowing younger Scouts and those still using training wheels to practice as if they were riding a two wheeled bike. By focusing first on balance and steering without worrying about pedaling, Scouts were able to build confidence, improve coordination, and develop the core skills needed for independent riding.

The Bike Rodeo is part of Pack 2036’s ongoing commitment to providing hands-on, outdoor experiences for children in Kindergarten through 5th grade. The pack offers a year-round program focused on adventure, service, leadership, and character development through activities such as camping, hiking, STEM projects, community service, and outdoor skills.

Cub Scout Pack 2036 meets Thursday evenings at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Pearl River and welcomes boys and girls in Kindergarten through 5th grade from Pearl River and the surrounding communities.
