The Morning Muster: A Column For and By Veterans

SSgt Johnny “Joey” Jones Inspires Rockland County

When reflecting on military service, we often tend to speak about things like duty, commitment, and enduring bonds formed in uniform. Yet, one of the most important lessons that our time in uniform instills in us is how to respond when life changes in an instant. Just one week after the 25th anniversary of September 11th, local veterans, law enforcement officers, county employees, and members of the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office gathered for a powerful reminder of the true meaning of overcoming adversity and reclaiming one’s mission.

The Rockland County District Attorney’s Office Resilience Program, under the leadership of Tom Walsh, was proud to introduce combat wounded Marine Corps Staff Sergeant and Fox News Contributor  Johnny Joey Jones. During this event, Jones delivered a moving and insightful speech about the reward of service and sacrifice. His message truly resonated with anyone facing physical, mental, or personal hardships.

Defying the Odds

On August 6th, 2010, while deployed as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technician in Afghanistan, Jones suffered life altering injuries when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated right beneath him. The impact from the blast resulted in the loss of both legs above the knee. This resulted in a daunting two year recovery process filled with surgeries and intense physical rehab at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Rather than allowing his injuries to dictate his future, Jones made a conscious decision to focus strictly on things that he can control, like his attitude, his daily life choices, and his commitment to help others. Even as a recovering patient at Walter Reed, he launched a peer mentorship program to support newly wounded service members by helping them navigate their own recovery journey and the complexities of the physical and emotional hurdles of sudden disabilities.

In 2012, following his medical retirement, Jones continued to build on the foundation of service. This resilient mindset transformed him toto a two time best selling author, a co-host on Fox News, and a leading advocate for veteran mental health and suicide prevention.  As if this were not enough, in an extraordinary testament to his leadership and dedication to service, Jones took a remarkable step earlier this year by reenlisting in the Marine Corps Reserve.

Lessons for Rockland County Veterans

Jones’ core message centered on a principle that resonated deeply with our local veteran community and law enforcement personnel in attendance: maintaining a positive mindset taking ownership of your choices no matter what the obstacle.

For veterans transitioning back into civilian life dealing with physical ailments, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), the battle is often decided by how we process the trauma. It is very easy to succumb to self isolation, anger, or despair, especially when the path ahead seems dark. Johnny Jones is a reminder to everyone that while we cannot control the cards we are dealt, we are in total control of how we play our hands.

Initiatives like the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office Resilience Program highlight the critical crossroads between law enforcement, local government, and the veteran community. In bringing inspiring leaders such as SSgt Johnny Joey Jones to Rockland, our community continues to reinforce that service does not end when the uniform comes off, nor do the principles of brotherhood, resilience, and adaptability.

Carrying the Mission Forward

Johnny Jones’ story is a living testament that even our greatest personal sacrifices can become the foundation of our greatest contributions to society. As veterans throughout the county, we may no longer be on the battlefield, but we still maintain a profound duty to ourselves, our families, and our communities. Trauma, hardship, and life transitions will always be a test to our resolve, but they do not have to define our story. In choosing purpose over passivity, leaning on one another through tough times, and staying active in our local area, we ensure that the strengths forged from military service continue to have a positive impact on our community.
