Annual Contest and Awards Ceremony to be Held by New City Fire Department

For more than 20 years, the New City Fire Department (NCFD) Auxiliary has proudly coordinated a Fire Prevention Contest that promotes essential home fire safety while educating elementary school students throughout the fire district.

The program is based on the national E.D.I.T.H. (Exit Drills In The Home) initiative. It teaches children critical life-saving skills, including how to identify a family meeting place, find two ways out of their bedroom, locate two exits from every room, and follow the vital rule: “Once you’re out, stay out.”

During the Annual Open House, the E.D.I.T.H. theme is reinforced through interactive safety stations. Visitors are encouraged to explore each station and receive a ticket for a free ice cream afterward.

Winners are recognized during a special awards ceremony at the Open House. In addition, two grand prize winners are selected, and the top two schools with the highest participation rates are awarded the prestigious Sparky Cup — which, like the Stanley Cup in hockey, must be earned anew each year.

Thanks to a strong, long-standing partnership with the Clarkstown Central School District, more than 2,500 students have received awards through this important program over the years.

This year’s event will be held on Sunday, October 4th, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at New City Fire Engine Company No. 1. The public is invited to attend the Open House and awards ceremony.
