Slattery Moving and Storage Celebrates 35 Years

By Devon Jane Schweizer

Slattery Moving and Storage celebrated the 35th anniversary of the company at their Nanuet Community Office on Thursday, Sept. 24.

The occasion was commemorated with a ribbon cutting for the office at 147 Main St., which officially opened on Jan. 28.

Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann, board members from the Nanuet Chamber of Commerce, and representatives of Senator Bill Weber, Congressman Mike Lawler, and County Executive Ed Day spoke to recognize owner Lawrence Slattery for his achievement.

“Lawrence is very attentive and so are the people in his business. They’ve got a great reputation,” Hoehmann said in an interview. “Through the community service, working with their customers, and being responsive — I think that’s the hallmark of a good business.”

Slattery decided to start the company on his own at 17 years old in Nanuet. He grew up delivering office furniture for his family’s company locally and saw an opportunity for his own moving services. As he got more jobs, he hired more movers to help him. As he hired more movers, he got more jobs. Once he was able to hire someone full-time, he was able to split his employees into multiple groups to serve more of the community. The company now stands strong with around a dozen employees

Currently, Slattery serves Rockland County, the Hudson Valley, and Northern Bergen County. The company also offers long-distance moving services over the East Coast from New York.

Over the last 35 years, Slattery Moving and Storage has survived numerous challenges: 9/11, the 2008 financial crisis, and COVID-19. Through these obstacles, Slattery has had to change with the industry. One way he did this was by offering a flat-rate for each move to avoid the uncertainty of an hourly rate for his clients.

“We’re constantly innovating to figure out how we can get new things out to our clients that better serve them. This office is one of them,” Slattery said. At the Nanuet Community Office, Slattery does meetups with realtors and the Chamber of Commerce. He also allows his partner realtors to do closings in the space. It’s been a full circle moment for Slattery to operate out of the same town they started in.

The team tries to support community causes to give back to the locals. Recently, they sponsored Jawonio’s Brick-A-Palooza event, a lego-inspired celebration raising money for people with special needs. They’ve been known to sponsor community events and street fairs, bringing their vintage 1965 International truck nicknamed “Mad Max” with them for kids to admire.

Slattery is looking forward to getting into more contact with the locals at the centrally located office while they also continue operations at their location in Haverstraw.

“Moving is a top three stressor. It’s death, divorce, and moving,” director of sales Lauren Alberto said. “The guys come in there and they just treat [clients] with so much respect. They’re delicate with them and they care for their belongings.”

“I think Lawrence has provided a space for them to really love to show up at their job every day,” she said.
