To the Editor,
On behalf of the Village of Sloatsburg, I am privileged, honored and delighted to extend congratulations to St. Joan of Arc Church on its 90th anniversary. This sanctuary not only stands as the center of the life for Catholics, but it also is a symbol of our community. Nine decades ago the descendants of Plymouth Rock joined with the children of Ellis Island to construct a house of worship for members of the Catholic faith.
The beauty of the architecture of the church is only surpassed by the hundreds and hundreds of those who have worshipped here throughout the years. The ringing of the bell announcing that masses are to commence can be heard throughout the valley. It is in this church that the milestones of life are observed — births, baptisms, first communions, confirmations, marriages and funerals. It is here that the groom standing at the altar awaits the entrance of his bride. The two of them see their lives and future before them based on their Catholic faith. Young children experience their first communion and affirm that they will follow their church teachings.
Celebrations are observed in times of joy and triumph. It is also in times of trials and tribulations that comfort, support and hope are offered. It is here that religious leaders and parents contribute to the development of the moral fiber and provide help in developing the courage necessary to live a spiritual life. The priests have not only served their flock but have provided guidance, assistance and strength to the greater community. In so doing they have enhanced the lives of us all.
St. Joan of Arc has followed the dictates of scriptureโฆ what is it that the Lord require of thee. To do justice, to love mercy and to walk humbly with thy God. St. Joanโs will continue to be recognized as a beacon of light, hope and compassion. It is a place of the heart and mind.
By the authority vested in me as the Mayor of the Village of Sloatsburg I hereby declare Sunday, May 11, 2014 as St. Joan of Arc Day in the Village of Sloatsburg.
Sincerely,
Mayor Carl Wright
