NYACK’S TURN TO TAKE THE PLUNGE

Penguin Plunge organizer Barbara Noyes, left, a South Nyack police officer, leads a group inspecting the site of the annual Penguin Plunge on the Hudson River in Nyack. With Barbara are: Billy Reiner, dressed as a penguin mascot for the Plunge; Kathleen Gonzalez, Alex’s mother; Justin Gonzalez, Alex’s brother; Bill Reiner, a member of the Plunge’s organizing committee; Alex Fernandez; and O&R’s Trish Austin. O&R donated $500 to the fundraiser. Francesco was not available for the photo.

Portions of the proceeds from the fifth annual Penguin Plunge benefit fundraiser in Nyack this year will go to two local youngsters who have suffered from severe health problems. Alex Fernandez, a fourth grader at Valley Cottage Elementary School, and Francesco Galvano, a seventh grader form Pearl River Middle School, will get help with their medical bills from money raised when hardy adults voluntarily take a winter dip into the frigid Hudson River in Nyack on March 4 at Memorial Park from noon to 2 p.m. (the actual plunge is at 1:30 p.m.). Donations can be made to the Penguin Plunge, Inc., 150 Hoover St., Blauvelt, N.Y. 10913. The Penguin Plunge, Inc. is a 501c3 non-profit organization.
