District Attorney Thomas Zugibe said the findings pertaining to the death of Herve Gilles in Spring Valley will be presented to a grand jury within a week’s time. Gilles was shot by a Spring Valley police officer in December 2011 following a confrontation.
Gilles was portrayed by Spring Valley authorities as being drunk and violent at the time of the incident, however many in the community described him as someone who is not dangerous and should not have ended up dead.
Zugibe said he expected the matter to be handled speedily, at which point more information would be made public. Neither Zugibe nor the Spring Valley Police Department have indicated which police officer shot Gilles. Zugibe also noted that his investigation into the case was completely independent from Spring Valley’s.
In December around 500 members of the Spring Valley staged a march and protest in response to the shooting, demanding answers from the authorities.
