Woops! Dolan Accidentally Nominates Layne, Reda Catches the Mistake

Woopsie daisy! Good thing Vinny Reda was fast on his toes at Tuesday night’s County GOP Convention held in Clarkstown, because Ramapo GOP chairman Michael Dolan forgot to remove GOP Committeeman and former Airmont Mayor John Layne- recently hit with felony corruption charges- from the town’s delegate roll.

As each town was reading their roll of delegates, Dolan let Layne’s name slip, immediately catching the attention of County Chairman Vinny Reda, who reminded Dolan he must be making a mistake. Layne’s name was promptly removed.

Layne, still deputy highway superintendent of Ramapo at last check but presumed to be on his way out, was arrested last week and stands accused of several crimes dating back to his tenure as building inspector of the Village of Sloatsburg between 2002 and 2009.

District Attorney Tom Zugibe said Layne had violated the village’s ethics code and then covered it up in the village records. Zugibe also said Layne is accused of not requiring some residents and businesses to obtain building permits and file the proper paperwork in order to conceal his own work.

In addition, according to Zugibe, Layne took money in exchange for electrician work but never made the improvements.

The Rockland County Times has learned that in addition to his job as deputy superintendent of highways for the Town of Ramapo, which pays over $80,000, Layne is currently the building inspector of the Village of Wesley Hills and had recently worked for the Village of Suffern as building inspector as well. He served as Mayor of Airmont from 1999 to 2007.
