New Store Offers Thrifty Prices in a West Haverstraw Warehouse

A struggling economy has spawned many new business concepts catering to the newly frugal ways of consumers. My Warehouse Store in West Haverstraw is one of those, as business owners John Picinic and Gary Garran have put together an enterprise that provides quality pre-owned merchandise at affordable prices.

Picinic and Garran opened their doors last March and are pleased with some early success. While they offer a wide variety of items including antiques, collectibles and even a professional baseball pitching machine, they specialize in pre-owned furniture that prospective sellers display in their facility on consignment.

Picinic comments, “We find that having listings on E-Bay and Craig’s List works for us. People who want to sell furniture on-ine find that it costs a lot of money to ship. Many people are not comfortable with strangers coming to their homes.”

He continued, “People can bring furniture to the warehouse and leave it on consignment. Prospective buyers can come and see our merchandise any time during business hours instead of having to set up an appointment at the seller’s home. It just makes the whole process easier. Also, we try to tell people to be realistic in what they can expect to receive for their pre-owned furniture.”

Garran adds, “We don’t deal in junk. You will find many well-known names among our couches, living room sets, kitchen tables, bedroom sets, and sleepers. We suggest that you check out our website but make sure to call before you come. A lot of this furniture moves very fast and we often see a quick turnaround.”

He outlined how the consignment process works. “If a seller’s item is sold in the first month, the seller receives 60 percent of the proceeds from the sale. In the second month, it is 50-50. In the third month, the seller receives 40 percent of the proceeds. At the end of three months we either donate the item to charity or the seller comes and picks it up.”

The owners bring varied backgrounds to this venture. Picinic had a long career in the data communications field working with major retailers including Bloomingdale’s, A & S, J. Crew, and Federated Department Stores. He has degrees in mechanical engineering and is a graduate of Jersey City State College (renamed New Jersey City University) and Stevens Tech. Garran spent 25 years in law enforcement in the New Jersey Department of Corrections.

My Warehouse Store is located at 8 Carol Avenue in the West Haverstraw Business Park just off West Railroad Avenue in West Haverstraw, NY.
