Artistic director Joe Brancato and literary manager Angelo Parra announced that this year’s series of the popular Monday evening “Play With Your Food” series of new play readings begins this Monday, June 11 with a reading of “The Coach” by award-winning comic playwright Matt Hoverman.
Subsequent readings in the series are scheduled Mondays, July 16, August 6, August 27 and September 10. Each reading is preceded by a “picnic” dinner provided by Jimmy’s on Main Restaurant in Nanuet, New York, and followed by a discussion among the playwright, actors and audience.
Dinners begin at 6 p.m.; readings begin at 7 p.m. at Penguin Rep’s intimate 108-seat theatre in Stony Point, New York. “The Coach” is about jaded, broke corporate trainer Doug who lands the job that could fix all his problems — at a nuclear weapons facility. Unfortunately, he added his best friend to his team — Phil, a plucky masseur determined to save the world. Can these two lost men figure out a way to do well — and do good — in the world’s most toxic work environment?
Matt Hoverman’s play “Who You See Here” is headed for Broadway later this year Admission including the “picnic” dinner is $21. A subscription to all five readings is $84. Tickets must be ordered in advance at www.penguinrep.org or by calling 845-786-2873.
