The evil mind of killer pervert Michael Mele seems to have driven some members of the family of his ex-girlfriend Lindsay Campbell off a ledge.

Campbell’s brother, Robert M. Campbell, 22, recently conducted a brazen string of burglaries across northern New Jersey and Rockland, Orange and Sullivan Counties.

By all accounts, Campbell grew up a “good kid,” but his state of mind has taken a turn for the worse in recent years.

Living with the knowledge and memories of his sister’s relationship with the maniac Mele, and an addiction to pain pills, have helped to precipitate his decline into criminality, the Rockland County Times has learned.

Campbell, of 29 Grandview Dr., Bloomingburg, NY, was arrested June 6 by Stony Point police and is faced with seven charges: second degree burglary, second degree attempted burglary, second degree criminal trespass, third degree criminal trespass, fourth degree attempted grand larceny, fourth degree criminal mischief, and possession of burglar’s tools.

On Tuesday, June 18 Campbell was indicted on the counts of third degree burglary (class D felony), fourth degree grand larceny (class E felony), fourth degree criminal possession of stolen property (class E felony) and two counts of possession of burglar’s tools (class A misdemeanor).

So prolific was Campbell’s crime spree that residents of his hometown in Bloomingburg, Sullivan County, told the Rockland County Times they believe he robbed every house on their block and dozens of homes in the surrounding area. Rockland County authorities agree he is a risk and set his bond at a hefty $500,000.He is currently in county prison, unable to post bond.

The Campbell family has struggled to cope with the fact that Lindsay Campbell, then only 19, was dating Michael Mele, at the time of his brutal slaying of Laura Garza in Dec. 2008.

The Campbells had no clue that the clean-cut Wallkill-resident Mele was a monster.

On December 3, 2008 Brooklyn beauty Garza, 25-years-old at the time, left the Chelsea club Marquee with Mele, like Lindsay, unaware he was a registered sex offender.

Mele, in fact, had been arrested in 2007 for masturbating in front of unsuspecting women in the Palisades Center Mall’s parking lot in West Nyack.

Garza would never come home again.

Her body was found April 11, 2010 in Olyphant, Pennsylvania. By that time Mele had gotten in further trouble with the law, for masturbating in a tanning salon, for breaking conditions of his parole and for possessing stolen credit cards.

On Jan. 23, 2012 Mele plead guilty to first-degree manslaughter and tampering with evidence in the case, and was sentenced to 23 years in prison.

As the headlines have splashed across local and regional papers and news stations, the last three plus years have been hard on the Campbell family, who police had described as being “helpful” with the investigation.

Young Robert Campbell was arrested in Stony Point on June 6 after he was seen driving a vehicle believed to be used in a previous robbery.

The Stony Point Detective Bureau was able to quickly set up a surveillance on said vehicle, which led them to a residence where Campbell was observed committing another burglary within the town.

The solid policework of the Stony Point cops saved the entire region from more of Campbell’s dirty business.
