During the month of June, the Clarkstown Police SMART Sales Unit, ย in conjunction with Officers of the Rockland County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (SPCC) and utilizing underage undercover agents conducted alcohol compliance checks of local businesses in the Town of Clarkstown.
Out of a total of 30 businesses compliance checks for underage alcohol sales, four businesses were cited for selling alcohol to minors: Nyack Food Mart in Central Nyack; Mobil Mart, Stop & Shop, and Gulf Express in Nanuet. Employees of these businesses were arrested and charged with the Class A Misdemeanor of Unlawfully Dealing with a Child 1stย Degree and released on Appearance Tickets with return Court Dates in July at Clarkstown Justice Court.
Twenty-six businesses were found to be in compliance with the law:ย DB Mart, Congers Spirits, Congers Little Food Mart, Route 303 Auto Service, and Titanic Deli in Congers; A&P, Spirit Town, Rite Aid, Shell Mart, ATS Grocery, United Food, Downtown Liquors and Lucky Convenient in Valley Cottage; Citgo Mart in Upper Nyack; Shell Mart in Central Nyack; Stop & Shop, Rite Liquors, Shoprite, and Mobil on the Run in West Nyack;ย Route 304 Liquors in New City; Food Mart USA in Bardonia; Pathmark, Buy Wise Liquors, Nanuet Minimart, Getty Mart, and Citgo Mart in Nanuet.
The SMART Sales Unit conducts monthly enforcement compliance checks of local licensed retailers of alcohol products with subsequent court ordered educational classes in the safe and lawful sale of these products. Authorities said the goal is to increase compliance in partnership with local retailers through monthly enforcement and decrease the opportunity of our youth accessing these products and avoid the “tragic consequences of underage alcohol use and abuse.”
