FOOD DOCTOR FIASCO

Rockland County District Attorney Thomas P. Zugibe on Friday announced that Dr. Laura Piluso, 44, of 3 Meadow View Terrace, Chester, NY,  has been arrested and arraigned on one count of grand larceny in the second degree, a class “C” felony, and one count of falsifying business records in the first degree, a class “E” Felony.

Between February 10, 2011 and March 29, 2012, Piluso, a licensed podiatrist at Rockland Podiatry in Bardonia, New York allegedly submitted hundreds of fraudulent medical bills to various healthcare providers, including Empire Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Oxford, GHI and Medicare, in an amount exceeding $84,000. Additionally, the defendant is accused of falsely filing the fraudulent medical billing to her own medical billing company, thus cheating Rockland Podiatry out of its share of the billing. According to the charges, the theft was uncovered by another doctor at Rockland Podiatry.

The Rockland County District Attorney’s Office Special Investigation’s Unit investigated the case and made the arrest. Piluso was arraigned yesterday in the Town of Clarkstown Justice Court by the Honorable Craig Johns. She was released on her own recognizance and due to return to court on January 16, 2013. A class “C” felony is punishable by up to 15 years in state prison, while a class “E” felony is punishable by up to four years in state prison. The case is being prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney Kristen Conklin.
