FOODMART INTERNATIONAL GOES BUST

Rockland’s largest international grocery store is kaput!

This week owners of the Foodmart International in Spring Valley suddenly abandoned the massive warehouse of groceries, leaving tons of food rotting. Village police and other village employees had to clean out of the store before a health hazard emerged.

The decision to close up the shop located on Rt. 59 does not come out of the blue. Ownership first filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy over the summer and had been wrangling with O&R over its electricity costs.

The store was unable to pay a bill in 2012 which led to O&R pulling the plug on the entire strip mall that International Foodmart is a part of. Both O&R and Foodmart International opened themselves up to legal action because adjoining businesses were affected by the decision.
