On Saturday, January 12, the Malayalee Association of Rockland County (MARC) held their Christmas and New Year celebration at the Congers Community Center. The Malayalee community traces its roots to Kerala, known as the “Spice Garden of India.” Kerala is also known for its palm-lined beaches, thick jungles, plantation-covered hills, and enthralling rivers and lakes. MARC is involved in many charitable and community endeavors, including “Eye for the Blind,” a program that restores sight to the blind and done jointly with the Lions and the “Golden Club,” an effort in support of the elders in the Malayalee community. MARC also sponsors a scholarship program that is eligible to all Rockland High School graduates. More than 200 family members and friends of the Malayalee community were in attendance, a celebration marked by traditional music, dance, and ethnic finery. Two of the young celebrants spent some time with Rockand County Legislator Ed Day during a break in the show.
