A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 7 a.m. Friday to 1 p.m. Saturday, the National Weather Service has announced.
NWS forecasts an all-snow event for Rockland, Westchester, Putnam and Orange Counties with snow totals of 12-16 inches, and possibly some localized higher amounts.
The worst of the storm will occur between Friday evening and Saturday morning, with the first snow beginning Friday morning. The snow will not become heavy until late Friday afternoon or evening.
Parts of New England are forecast to receive up to 3 feet of snow. This is the first major snowstorm (over 6″) for Rockland County since the epic October 2011 Halloween blizzard.
