Ms. Cornell,
I am the President of the Fraternal Order of Police lodge in Rockland County. I have spent almost 40 years in law enforcement and am appalled by your comment comparing retired police officers to Chris Dorner — a disgraced ex-cop, who systematically murdered civilians and police officers. The men and women serving in law enforcement perform their jobs with great honor and respect here in Rockland and throughout New York State. These officers are never “off duty” and even upon retirement they utilize their skills and training to protect the public.
The United States Congress recognized this in 2004 when they passed the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act, HR-218, which authorized both active and RETIRED cops to carry their firearm anywhere in the United States. The purpose of this legislation was to permit the almost one million active and RETIRED law enforcement officers to be able to protect themselves, their families and the public. This law was enhanced and signed by President Obama in 2010.
I have no words to describe your reprehensible disrespect for law enforcement and those who have served.
Your actions tell me that it is probably time for you to step down and begin retirement yourself.
