Albany, NY – Notorious late-term abortionist Kermit Gosnell has been convicted of the first-degree murder of three infants who were born alive following late-term abortions. Gosnell was also convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the death of one of his female patients, along with 21 counts of having violated state laws against late-term abortion. Gosnell faces either life imprisonment or the death penalty for his crimes.
“The jury in this case is to be congratulated for making a just verdict in regard to four lives taken by Kermit Gosnell,” said the Rev. Jason J. McGuire, Executive Director of New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms. “Sadly, however, these four deaths are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the gruesome death and devastation that occurred for years in Gosnell’s late-term abortion mill. The degradation of human life and dignity perpetrated by Gosnell is so great that it defies description. We will never know just how many lives he and his staff have taken. While all Americans should be grateful for this verdict, we should also be deeply disturbed that the State of Pennsylvania turned a politically-motivated blind eye to Kermit Gosnell’s actions for as long as it did.”
Rev. McGuire continued, “Although trial testimony regarding the despicable, inhuman acts of Gosnell and his staff went underreported, many Americans know enough about those acts to be horrified by them. But we cannot respond simply by being horrified. Rather, we must be brave enough to raise questions that cry out for answers: How many other late-term abortionists dispose of infants born alive following abortions, or refuse to treat them? How many other women are endangered by Gosnell-esque practices in other clinics? If we feel horror at Kermit Gosnell’s infanticides, should we not feel the same horror at the abortion of fully formed infants in his clinic, and in other abortion clinics around our nation? Is there any moral distinction between taking the life of an innocent baby after it is born and taking the life of an innocent baby before its birth? As Americans, we must face the terrible truth that the practice of abortion on demand-including the late-term abortion of fully formed infants-is an injustice of the worst kind that cannot be reconciled with the right to life that is recognized in the Declaration of Independence.”
