The Hudson Cove Group, Inc. has begun production on a new film entitled “The Great All-American Food Fight” and is asking the community to get behind them.
Joe Allen is writer, producer and director of the film which will focus on People to People, the largest food pantry in Rockland. The county has a median household income of $84,000 (2010) and yet as many as one in 10 people don’t know where their next meal is coming from.
Allen will film in and around the pantry for the better part of a year. Where does the food come from? Why is there not enough food? What are the politics—local and regional—involved in feeding people? Who is the pantry feeding and why? What can be done to improve hunger in the suburbs and what are the problems that will emerge from successfully feeding all that need it?
It is symbolic of the state of the economy in the US, as the stock market has returned to record levels and home prices again beginning to increase, but for those at the other end of the spectrum, life couldn’t be more difficult. Worse, hunger is creeping and consuming more of the spectrum from the outside into the middle class as one in six people in the US is food insecure and one five of our children live in poverty.
“People are hesitant to talk about hunger. They don’t want to admit how close it is their home in their middle class community or how it could be them tomorrow, how the numbers are staggering in the suburbs, how in Rockland County alone there are 47 food pantries or how there are 50 million hungry people in the United States and 16 million hungry children.” said Allen, who is also senior VP of Community Affairs at Active International.
Allen recently completed “20 Million Minutes,” a documentary about how a small community banded together to try to influence the International Olympic Committee to observe a minute of silence in the memory of the 11 Israeli Olympians murdered by terrorists during the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. That project was shot in Israel, London, New York, Washington, D,C. and Boston, MA. It was premiered in March of this year.
