Statement on Gov. Cuomo’s Tax–Free Zone Gimmick from Assemblyman Kieran Michael Lalor (R,C,I – Fishkill)
“Governor Cuomo’s ‘tax free’ plan is a gimmicky attempt to justify corporate welfare. Cuomo’s tax free plan really means tax free for just a few and high taxes for everyone else. The plan will boost a few corporations picked by Albany, while the rest of the state is stuck with high taxes. It’s not fair to the small businesses already here and struggling to stay above water. The plan asks those small businesses to keep paying some of the highest taxes in the country. It offers them no relief. Instead, they’ll be footing the bill for the government subsidized corporations. Sometimes, they’ll even be footing the bill for their competitors.
“The plan isn’t just unfair to small business, it’s unfair to workers. People working at the handful of government subsidized corporations won’t pay any income taxes. But, every other New York worker will be paying the same high tax rate. They’ll be paying to subsidize the tax-free lifestyle of a few.
“Cuomo tries to write off objections by saying, ‘There are winners and losers, yes. Welcome to the state of New York.’ ย Why would the governor want to make a bad tax system worse? He should fix the system and stop picking winners and losers. We need to lower taxes for all New Yorkers. We don’t need gimmicks, we need across the board tax cuts.”
