Arrest made for assault on a police officer

stewardOn June 24, 2013 at approximately 3:40 p.m. the Clarkstown Police Department responded to the fourth floor of the Palisades Center Mall for a report of a fight between two parties.

Upon arrival, a uniformed officer attempted to speak with one of the parties involved in the altercation, Rashaun Steward, 27, from Bronx, NY, who the officer said then attempted to push back against him. Steward was placed under arrest and during the struggle, Steward punched the officer in the face causing the officer a facial injury, police say.

Steward was handcuffed and transported to Clarkstown Police Headquarters where he is currently waiting to be arraigned in Clarkstown Justice Court. Steward is being charged with assault second (felony), obstructing governmental administration second, resisting arrest (both misdemeanors) and disorderly conduct (violation).

The officer was treated at Nyack Hospital and released. The second party that was involved in the fight was identified and released without charges.
