STU GATES SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Kimberly Kenny of Garnerville and Kevin Mackey of New Windsor, were the two winners of the Rockland County Volunteer Firemen’s Association Stuart L. Gates Scholarship. Each received checks in amount of $1,250 from RCVFA Treasurer Mike Kramar to help further their college goals at the July 12 meeting, 7:30 p.m., at the Hillcrest firehouse on Route 45.

Kimberly was ranked 13th in her class that recently was graduated from North Rockland high school. She plans a communications major this fall at either Marist College or Quinnipiac University. She graduated with a 98.2979 average. She was a member of the National Honor Society as well as the National Science, English, World Languages and Social Studies Honor Societies. Kimberly was active in the school’s drama society for three years and was awarded the Girl Scout gold award. Her grandfather, Christopher P. Morrison, is a member of the Thiells FD, and an RCVFA member since 1989.

Kevin plans to attend Lycoming College for an accounting degree. He was ranked third in his class that recently was graduated from the New York Military Academy, with a 3.7 grade-point-average. His gradation rank was captain and company commander of headquarters company at the academy. He was a member of the National Honor Society as well as the Junior ROTC. He earned varsity letters in wrestling, where he was captain, as well as soccer and tennis. His grandfather, Douglas Mackey, is a member of the West Haverstraw FD, and an RCVFA member since 1960.

The names of these scholarship winners will be added to the wall plaque in the lobby of Rockland’s Fire Training Center. RCVFA’s first scholarship winners were back in 1996.
