Leo and Anne Marino, formerly of Garnerville, then Stony Point, celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary with family at a luncheon party at Diana’s Restaurant and Catering in New Windsor, New York, on August 25, 2013. Leo and Anne were married on August 28, 1948, at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Haverstraw. It was the hottest day of that year! Their wedding reception at the Platzl Braus Haus in Pomona, New York, included 250 guests. They have been blessed with three children, six grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.
Leo graduated from Haverstraw High School in 1940 and recently attended his 70th Anniversary high school reunion. During WWII Leo flew 60 missions as a tail gunner in a B-17 for the U.S. Army Air Corps. After the war he took advantage of the GI Bill and graduated from NYU with a B.S. degree. After marrying Anne, he worked for the Catholic Youth Organization and retired in 1986. For many years in the 1950s and 1960s, Leo ran the Haverstraw Town Day Camp and created wonderful memories for many town children at day trips to Bear Mountain and Davies Lake.
After retirement Leo was active in many veteran organizations including the V.F.W. and Catholic War Veterans. At home, Leo nurtured the family vegetable garden. He entertained his children and grandchildren, and continues to entertain his great grandchildren with magic tricks and jokes. To the delight of her family, Anne mastered the role of the stay-at-home mom. Anne was the homework helper and kisser of bumps and bruises. Her kitchen greeted friends and family with the enticing aroma of apple pie, cookies, and home cooked meals. No matter who walked in the door unexpectedly around supper time, Anne miraculously always had plenty of food to offer the guest. Her crumb cake is legendary. Since 1984 Leo and Anne have lived in New Windsor, New York. Leo and Anne are thankful to all the wonderful people who have enriched their lives over the past 65 years and for the blessing of good health.
