Traffic was backed up on South Mountain Road last Friday afternoon as production vehicles and crew members descended upon the area to shoot scenes for an upcoming season two episode of the Fox drama “The Following.” The show stars Kevin Bacon as an FBI agent tracking a serial killer played by co-star James Purefoy.

The filming took place at 62 South Mountain Road, a small four-room cottage set way off the road on a private drive and partially obscured by tall trees and woods. The property, which includes the house and 4.25 acres of forest, streams and fields, is currently listed for sale at $495,000.

Several police cars remained at the site as officers directed traffic and ensured safety and privacy for the film crew. Production vehicles as well as equipment and private cars lined the narrow winding road. The main staging area, however, was several miles away at the Provident Bank Park parking lot. At least 10 full sized rigs, as well as several smaller equipment trucks and a craft services area, formed a temporary city for cast and crew.

Those inconvenienced by the traffic on South Mountain Road Friday might take some comfort in knowing that filming in Rockland brings income both through fees paid to the towns, including fees for police and sanitation support, and through increased patronage of local suppliers while the production remains in the area. With its close proximity to New York City and its wide variety of landscapes and municipalities, Rockland County is often used as a location for TV, film and commercial productions.

A tiny house nestled deep in the woods certainly seems like an ideal setting for the dark themes of this show. Those who follow “The Following,” keep your eyes open for glimpses of Rockland in the upcoming season next year!
