SUPERVISOR STEWART ADDRESSES HATE CRIME IN ORANGETOWN

Dear Neighbors,

The Town of Orangetown has zero tolerance for hate crimes.

As many of you are probably aware, a Pearl River family awoke on Sunday morning to discover that the tires of their cars had been slashed and the cars had been spray-painted with racist and anti-Semitic graffiti. These acts of racially-motivated violence are appalling. No family in our town should have to deal with this sort of crime. I want you to know that the Orangetown Police Department has classified this incident as “Criminal Mischief as a Hate Crime” and has assigned detectives to investigate this crime.

The Police Department has stepped up patrols in the area where this incident occurred and has reached out to county law enforcement authorities and to police departments in neighboring municipalities in New York and New Jersey to coordinate efforts to apprehend whoever is responsible for this criminal act.

I have full faith in Chief Kevin Nulty and our outstanding police department and am confident that they will conduct a thorough investigation so that the individual or individuals behind this hateful act will be arrested and charged to the fullest extent of the law.

Because this is an active investigation, anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact the Orangetown Police Department at 845-359-3700.

Sincerely,

Andy Stewart
Town Supervisor
