ED DAY SAYS PROTECTING BREGA IS AGENDA LETTER TO BUDGET AND FINANCE COMMITTEE, STATEMENT ABOUT PROPOSED POSITION ABOLISHMENTS

Letter from Ed Day to Legislature Budget and Finance Committee:

As part of a carefully considered review of county departments and operations, my administration has already cut nearly $3 million in salary and benefits since January 1, 2014, in high-level, upper management positions. However, this resolution sponsored by Legislative Chairman Alden Wolfe, Majority Leader Aron Wieder and Planning and Public Works Chair Ilan Schoenberger to abolish these specific positions is wrong on so many levels. Four of the positions were selectively targeted due to their professional obligations to enforce the legal and operational terms of the county’s public transportation contract with Brega Transport Corp.

Furthermore, the attempt to pink-slip 17 women out of 22 staffed positions is a highly-questionable move. These maneuvers would certainly open the county to costly litigation. It’s regrettable that these legislative leaders have engaged in a deliberate campaign to disrupt county government and demoralize our dedicated workforce by holding faultless employees hostage. My administration remains actively engaged in meaningful consolidation at all levels and I sincerely thank those legislators who did not support this ill-conceived resolution.

Sincerely,

Edwin J. Day
County Executive
