On Tuesday, November 25, 2014 County Executive Ed Day, District Attorney Thomas Zugibe, New York State Senator David Carlucci, Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski and County Legislator-elect Lon Hofstein joined board members and other volunteers to assist Rockland Independent Living Center in distributing over 100 complete Thanksgiving meals to families in need. The meals included a 12 – 14 pound turkey, vegetables, potatoes, stuffing, dessert and other items to feed a family of six. RILC is a cross disability direct service and advocacy agency located in New City. Among the many programs for people with disabilities, the agency operates a food pantry that last year served in excess of 5,000 people and distributed more than 125,000 pounds of food.
According to RILC Executive Director George Hoehmann, โThere are over 30,000 people living in Rockland who are food insecure. The holidays are a particularly difficult time for individuals and families in need and we are grateful for the incredible support from the community that has helped us to meet this need.โ He added, โWe received donations from the Hudson Valley Food Bank, BJโs Foundation, Rockland Community Foundation, Inserra Supermarkets, LS Direct Marketing, and the Clarkstown Sunrise Rotary Club as well as numerous food drives conducted by Girl Scout Troops, the Lions Club and the Rockland Country Day School and individual donations.โ
