Upstate man accused of statutory rape of 14-year-old following State Police routine checkpoint stop in Rockland

Picture 7On Friday, December 12, 2014 at approximately 11:30 p.m. State Police were conducting a sobriety check point on the NYS Thruway in Rockland County.

Troopers observed a vehicle driven by Ronald P. McCarthy, 21, of Wawarsing, NY traveling through the check point with an equipment violation. He was stopped and then interviewed on suspicion of DWI. While determining if McCarthy was intoxicated, both he and his passenger gave conflicting information regarding their prior travel and intended destination.

Further investigation revealed that the passenger was a 14-year-old female who had left her parent’s house without their knowledge. McCarthy was taken into custody for endangering the welfare of a child and transported to SP Tarrytown.

Further investigation then determined that McCarthy and the 14-year-old victim had engaged in sexual intercourse the previous night and McCarthy was additionally charged with rape, second degree, a class D felony. McCarthy was arraigned in the Town of Orangetown Court and remanded to Rockland County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail.
