To the Editor,
The real news story would be how many times has he been seen by professionals at the County Dept. of Mental Health only to be released over and over again? I think a look at how people with mental health problems are ignored and or not given proper treatment and/or follow up would be a real interesting read.
Further, I think it is a shame the way our local media [News 12, Lohud, Rockland County Times] have covered this situation. It shows a complete lack of professionalism, not to mention any sign of care and concern for this troubled person.
Clearly it would be interesting if someone reported on the system [mental health in Rockland/New York state] rather than taking the thoughtless road and continue to trash the man. Itโs like blaming the crime victim. I dont believe this man can help himself, clearly he is not in touch with reality. But whatโs your excuse?
Sincerely,
Dave Veraja

Editorโs response:
Mr. Veraja,
Neighbors have made clear to the Rockland County Times their belief that Mr. Chillino is capable of harming others. The newspaperโs job in this case is to keep a spotlight on the situation until the proper authorities do something about it.
The newspaper has no access to an individualโs medical records. We have not heard any evidence indicating heโs been in and out of mental hospitals. He has been living in a home owned by his family on a quiet neighborhood road in Stony Point for most of his adult life.
