BUCKLE UP OR GET NICKED WITH A TICKET: Annual Buckle Up NY Enforcement Program in Effect for Next Two Weeks

The Haverstraw Town Police Department will be participating in the Buckle Up New York (BUNY) enforcement program from May 22 through June 4, 2017. New York State’s Governors Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) will partner with local law enforcement agencies across the state for this event, which is supported and promoted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Since the seat belt law became effective on January 1, 1985, occupant restraint compliance in New York has risen from 57 percent to a record level of 92 percent in 2016. With the increase in occupant restraint compliance, authorities say there has been a significant reduction in the number of personal injury and fatal motor vehicle crashes.

Officers will focus on enforcement of seatbelt safety laws, including child safety seat laws, with the goal of achieving public cooperation in the consistent use of safety belts. Officers will be on patrol in high traffic areas throughout the town during this period enforcing seatbelt safety laws.
