Carlucci: Protect the Next Generation from Tobacco Addiction

State Senator David Carlucci (D-Rockland/Westchester) announced new legislation to enact a tax on vapor products used in an electronic cigarette or other similar device. New York State does not currently tax the liquids used in e-cigarette devices.

“Not only will this tax help stunt the growth of e-cigarette use it will also help us protect the health of New Yorkers. The statistics on teenage use of e-cigarettes are alarming, 33 percent of high school students reported using a vaping device and because manufacturers are not required to report e-cigarette ingredients we do not know what is in them.” said Senator Carlucci.

The proposed tax is 25 cents per fluid milliliter. This new tax revenue will benefit the same programs already receiving money from current tobacco taxes, mainly Wellness and Smoking Cessation Programs.

“As we start a New Year with new resolutions and goals we want to make it as easy as possible for people to stop smoking. Studies have shown that when the tax and price of tobacco products increase the rate of smoking and tobacco use decreases. New York must step up to do right by our youngest generation,” concluded Senator Carlucci.

This legislation will be introduced this week.
