New City, NY  County Executive Ed Day stood with Sheriff Louis Falco, County Clerk Paul Piperato, District Attorney Tom Zugibe, members of Donate Life Rockland and Live On NY in front of Building A at the Robert L. Yeager Health Complex to declare April Donate Life Month in Rockland County.

“We are here today to raise the Donate Life Flag, this flag is symbolic of a great achievement,” County Executive Day said. “We celebrate that Rockland County residents have increased donor registration in Rockland to a new high of 24 percent of the population, which is more than double the 11 percent rate of just a few years ago.”

During the ceremony elected officials urged residents to join the organ donor registry and give blood at the blood drive taking place inside Building A during the day Wednesday.

“At the end of the day this is something we all share and what better message to send to the people of Rockland County than that there are things out there that we all have in common which all too often we don’t talk about. When I see that organ donation and blood donation is on the uptick I’m very, very proud of that and I am proud that my fellow elected officials are such strong advocates in this effort,” said Day.

LiveOnNY President & CEO Helen Irving  was unable to attend the ceremony but sent this message of support. “The lifesaving impact of organ and tissue donation is truly remarkable.  During April, Donate Life Month, we celebrate this wonderful cause.  We pay tribute to the selfless donors who gave life to others, we reflect and rejoice with the recipients who enjoy renewed life, and we join hands with, and inspire hope in, those waiting for their second chance at life.  But, it doesn’t stop there.  It can’t stop there.  Over 90 percent of New Yorkers support organ donation, but just 32 percent are registered as donors.  So, as we celebrate this uniquely impactful cause, we ask New Yorkers to use Donate Life Month to learn more about organ and tissue donation, talk about organ and tissue donation, and, importantly, take the step to register as organ and tissue donors.”

Marta Rodriguez concluded the ceremony by singing the National Anthem as the Donate Life flag was raised outside of Building A at the Pomona Health Complex. Visit https://www.donateliferockland.org/ to join the organ donor registry and save a life!
