The man who opened fire on state troopers and was fatally wounded in the exchange on the Thruway near exit 15A in the Hillburn-Sloatsburg area has been identified as Rakim Tillery, a 35-year-old former resident of Albany.
State Police confirmed that Tiler was wanted for an attempted homicide in Albany earlier in the day on Wednesday, January 3, and was spotted on the Thruway in the Hillburn/Sloatsburg area at around 2:50 that afternoon.
Troopers Steven Missale and Ronald Raymond conducted a traffic stop of the Mercedes Benz driven by Rakim Tillery, 35, who immediately fired at the troopers.
Both officers returned fire, killing Tillery.
The troopers were transported to Westchester Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation into the incident is continuing and police ask anyone with information to call State Police at the Wallkill Troop F headquarters at 845-34-5300.
