On Mon., Feb. 26 in Spring Valley, the Surrey Carlton Apartments on Skin Ave. developed heavy flames and smoke. Approximately one hundred residents evacuated the building, leaving them in cold temperatures. Though all the residents made it out safely, 63 adults and 23 children were ousted from seven buildings. The fire is
believed to have started started in a common hallway on the second floor.
Valerie Britt, a resident of the complex, told CBS News that no alarm had been raised within the building and that she and
other residents fled the property after they were awoken by the smell of smoke. The Spring Valley Fire Department has confirmed that the fire was caused by a faulty hallway light, and that the buildings alarms went off almost two hours after residents contacted emergency services.
