County Executive’s Corner: Staying Safe in Extreme Heat

As we’ve had continuous stretches of extreme heat this summer, I think it is crucial to remind residents about steps they should take to stay safe in dangerous heat because it can very easily lead to serious health issues such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke, especially for vulnerable populations like the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions. Here are some essential tips to help families stay safe:

1. Stay hydrated and drink plenty of fluids. (8 to 10 glasses of water a day)

2. Eat hydrating foods like fruits and vegetables with high water content into your diet. Cucumbers, watermelon, and strawberries are excellent choices.

3. Stay indoors during the hottest part of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

4. Use air conditioning and if you don’t have air conditioning at home, spend time in air-conditioned public places such as shopping malls, libraries, or community centers.

5. Wear light clothing that is loose-fitting to help keep your body cool.

6. Apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and reapply every two hours, and after swimming or sweating.

7. Never leave children or pets in a car, even with the windows cracked. As a former first responder I want to remind families of the signs of heat exhaustion which include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and headache. If you experience these symptoms, move to a cooler place, drink water, and rest.

As for a heat stroke, symptoms include a high body temperature (103°F or higher), confusion, rapid pulse, and loss of consciousness. If you suspect heat stroke, call 911 immediately and try to cool the person down with whatever methods are available until help arrives.

By following these tips, you can protect yourself and your loved ones from the dangers of extreme heat. Remember, taking simple precautions can make a big difference in staying safe and healthy during hot weather. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay informed!
