Police Arrest Murder Suspect in Piedmont, South Carolina

On July 27th Yandie Martinez was apprehended over 700 miles away from Haverstraw, New York in an AirBnB in Piedmont, South Carolina.ย

Law Enforcement Officials have been searching for Martinez since July 1 in connection to the shooting and killing of 29 year old Christian Alvaredo in Haverstraw. Haverstraw Police Chief John Gould stated that Haverstraw detectives have obtained both witness testimony and security footage of the incident linking Martinez to the murder. It is not known at this time why Martinez allegedly shot Alvaredo, only that the two knew of each other and were acquaintances.ย

It was a highly collaborative effort that took place between law enforcement in both New York and South Carolina as leads took officers over several state lines as well as into the Dominican Republic while they searched for Martinez. Haverstraw Police Chief John Gould stated โ€œMultiple attempts were made by family and friends to have Martinez turn himself in. However, those attempts were unsuccessful. It was clear to us that Martinez was on the run and had no intention of surrenderingโ€. Martinez was eventually located by his usage of an unnamed social media app where officers were able to track him based on the server the suspect utilized.ย

On July 29th, Martinez was presented in Federal Court to answer a Federal Unlawful Flight to Avoid Prosecution warrant. He will soon be placed in the custody of the U.S. Marshals where he will be taken into custody in New York and arraigned on multiple charges, including 2nd Degree Murder and two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon. This is an ongoing investigation.
