All in With John Jastremski: Did Some Saturday Night Drama In Boston Save The 2024 Yankees?

Look, in no way am I going to pretend that the 2024 Yankees situation would mirror the depths of pain and sorrow that was felt in Boston in 2004.ย

86 years of history has a lot to do with that.ย

However, the Yankees have a little World Series drought of their own and havenโ€™t exactly had the best history against the hated rival over the last few seasons.ย

Saturday morning was about as miserable a wakeup as you could have as a Yankee fan.ย

The team squandered a 3 run lead that was given to them by a dramatic Aaron Judge home run and the prolonged abomination of their June and July felt in many ways never ending.ย

Itโ€™s tough for one day to immediately flip a switch for a team, but I do wonder if we will look back on Saturday July 27th as a massive turning point in the Yankees season.ย

Before the Yankees played the Boston Red Sox, the team acquired infielder/outfielder Jazz Chisolm from the Miami Marlins.

Chisolm adds a much needed dynamic of speed and athleticism to a team searching for exactly that.ย

Itโ€™s almost as if the news of the Chisolm pick up sparked a lineup that for a stretch of two months has looked pretty anemic.ย

That was on full display on Saturday night in Boston.ย

The Yankees and the Red Sox played a classic Fenway Park back and forth affair.ย

The Yankees were trailing by one heading into the 9th inning, were down to their last strike and found a way to tie the game thanks to Trent Grisham of all people.ย

They eventually rallied to score a bunch of runs in extra innings and finally took down Boston in dramatic fashion.ย

In order for the win to feel significant, they needed to go and back it up the following day.ย

On Sunday, the Yankees lineup once again produced in a big way. Pitcher Carlos Rodon delivered a high quality start and the Yankees won their first series of the year against the Red Sox.ย

Now, the Yankees have a long way to go in order to truly feel like the Boston Series this past weekend was the turning point of the 2024 season.ย

The next few months will either enhance that point or disregard it.ย

Sometimes thereโ€™s something funny in the water at Fenway Park when it comes to season turnarounds.ย

The 2004 Red Sox were slacking midway through July of that season.ย

They did not look the part of the Yankees in any way, plus ya know that whole Curse of the Bambino thing…ย

Yes, the 2004 ALCS is eventually where the Red Sox slayed the Yankee demons and made history of their own, but I would argue that the 2004 Red Sox officially made their move in July of that season.ย

They trailed the Yankees in a late summer marathon game. Emotions were running high after the Jason Varitek-Alex Rodriguez brawl.ย

Underrated Yankee killer Bill Mueller hit a walkoff homer against Mariano Rivera and from that point forward the 2004 Red Sox took off.ย

Maybe Iโ€™m searching, maybe Iโ€™m reaching, but maybe we look back on the 2024 New York Yankees and remember that July Saturday night in Boston….
