Fire Tears Through Nanuet Housing Complex

On Tuesday, September 3, an inferno raged through residences at the Peaks townhouses, formerly called Avalon Gardens in Nanuet.

Clarkstown Town Supervisor George Hoehmann said eight units were destroyed in the blaze that brought out 10 fire departments in Rockland County.

Flames consumed much of the building, which partially collapsed.

The cause of the fire was believed to be a natural gas leak, but has not been confirmed. Both power and gas were shut off to the surrounding area while emergency workers contained the fire.

As a result of the blaze, power and gas were cut around the immediate area.

Hoehmann said initial reports indicated there were no injuries  and no one missing.
