Jones and Lawler Meet with Cancer Survivors

Former Congressman Mondaire Jones and current Congressman Mike Lawler (R-17) recently met with cancer survivors and advocates to discuss and sign the American Cancer Societyโ€™s Cancer Action Networkโ€™s โ€œCancer Promiseโ€. The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, or ACS CAN, works diligently to educate lawmakers on the necessity of cancer research funding and the importance of instituting access to quality health care. ACS CAN works with the program Cancer Votes! to ensure that lawmakers put their vote where their mouth is and vote in accordance with the values of ACS CAN. Jonesโ€™ and Lawlerโ€™s signatures on the Cancer Promise holds them accountable for voting in support of expanding cancer care, cancer research and cancer prevention.ย

One of the survivors who spoke at the two separate meetings was Marcia Earle, an ovarian cancer survivor. Earle shared how โ€œLawmakers have immense power to effect real, positive change for cancer patientsโ€. Earle continued, โ€œI was grateful to be able to share my story with both candidates and isolate where they can break down barriers to care that define many New Yorkersโ€™ cancer experience if elected.โ€

Like many Americans, both Lawler and Jones have been affected by cancer in their family. Rep. Lawler lost his father to the disease, and Jones his grandfather. With such losses, it is not surprising that both would find this cause an easy choice to stand for.ย

Rep. Lawler and Jones also issued similar statements regarding the event, expounding on their appreciation for ACS CAN. Lawler stated โ€œI was proud to sign the Cancer Promise, and pledge to continue working with ACS on this front.โ€, while Jones said โ€œI am proud to sign the โ€˜Cancer Promiseโ€™ and look forward to being a partner with ACS CAN when I return to Congressโ€.ย

As the weeks dwindle until election day, the divide between Republican and Democrat can often seem too wide to cross. Thankfully, the two appear to have found common ground on this issue. It is heartening to know that no matter which representative Rockland County votes for, he has committed to supporting cancer research, cancer care, and will be dedicated to putting an end to this horrific illness.ย
