Scam Alert

The Ramapo PD is warning of a new email scam targeting our community. Scammers are sending emails claiming that they’ve hacked into your computer and recorded you watching illicit content. They threaten to release this fake video to your family and contacts unless you pay $2,000 in Bitcoin.

To make the scam more convincing, the email may include a Google Earth image of your home and a QR code for the payment. One of our residents noticed inconsistencies in the message and did not fall for the scam.

Stay vigilant! If you receive an email like this, do not panic, do not send money, and report it immediately to local law enforcement. Additionally, report the scam to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov. Scammers are getting more sophisticated, but with awareness, we can protect each other.
