The County Executive’s Corner – The County of Rockland is Different

I recently unveiled my proposed 2025 $876 million budget for the County of Rockland with highlights that include:

 A consecutive 2% reduction in County Property Tax

 Launching a Behavioral Health Training Institute and OPWDD Navigator Program.

 $1.3 million to the HERROES College Tuition Reimbursement Program for volunteer emergency responders.

 10% funding increase to nonprofit contract agencies and 224 agencies.

But the top highlight I feel compelled to underscore was the overarching message I shared for Rockland County Legislators and neighboring municipalities which is to direct spending at what is needed and necessary.

It’s clear that across agencies, localities, and certainly state and federal governments that spending has gotten way out of control with little to no remorse by lawmakers who respond by raising taxes to cover expenses or dig themselves out of a hole. Both of which are wrong and an insult to the communities they serve.

When I first took office in 2014, I inherited a $138 million dollar deficit and three consecutive double-digit tax increases to County Property Taxes by the prior administration. In only two terms, my administration – with help from our dedicated and hardworking employees – rescued this administration from the brink of bankruptcy.

We achieved this with disciplined budgeting and smart financial stewardship that should not be an afterthought now that the County of Rockland has a healthy surplus.

This is what makes the County of Rockland different. We are focused on operating efficiently by finding ways to offset costs and urge all my partners in government and our Legislature to do the same.

We are elected by the people to safeguard the money of our residents, not engage in careless spending happening far and wide. After all, it is their money and not ours.

We are operating this administration the way government should operate… by keeping spending low, alleviating costs, and re-investing in our residents and I pledge to continue the prudent and protective practices that have gotten us this far.

I must again express my sincere thanks to our employees, commissioners, and department heads. Your hard work is instrumental in this significant achievement.
