Attempted Mail theft goes up in smoke

Two young men were placed in police custody on Tuesday after fleeing from a Stony Point patrol car and totaling their own vehicle. 

During the midnight hours of October 8, the Stony Point Police Department received a report of a suspicious vehicle, with multiple occupants, removing mail from a mailbox in front of a residence in Tomkins Cove.

The officers dispatched to investigate, located a vehicle matching the description given to dispatch on Mott Farm Rd. and attempted to stop the car.

The operator of the vehicle instead took off at a high rate of speed temporally evading police who continued eastbound to locate the vehicle.

 While canvassing, the officers came upon the vehicle off the roadway down an embankment engulfed in flames. As they approached the vehicle, Sekou Touray, an 18 year old man from the Bronx, exited the passenger seat and immediately surrendered to police. The Stony Point Fire Department was dispatched to the scene.

Numerous agencies responded to the area to assist Stony Point Police with the search for the other suspects that fled the scene on foot. The Haverstraw Police Department, Rockland County Sheriff’s Office (Patrol, K-9, BCI, Aviation), Rockland County Intelligence Division, NYS Police, NYS State Park Police, and Ramapo Police Department’s K-9 Unit were all involved in the search.

After a thorough search of the area utilizing Haverstraw PD’s drone, RCSO Aviation and K-9, and Ramapo PD’s K-9, a 15 year old suspect  was taken into custody along with two other males. The two males were interviewed by detectives and released without criminal charges.

Touray was placed under arrest and charged with Grand Larceny and Endangering a Child  He was released on an appearance ticket returnable October 17, 2024, at 1:30 PM. The juvenile, whose name has not been made public, was processed and released to a family member.
