RZM Fine Arts and Antiques Inc Presents: Ask the Appraiser

Dear Jon,

ย I really enjoy your column each week and find it a pleasant change from all the drama of the news. Most informing too. My question, if I may, is do old books have any value? My uncle was friends with Ernest Hemingway. He would frequently visit him when Hemingway lived in Key West, Florida. As can be seen, Hemingway autographed this book to my uncle sometime in the 1950โ€™s. For the record, my uncle owned several restaurants in New York City and was one of Hemingwayโ€™s drinking buddies. Several years ago, I did have an antique dealer look at this book. The dealer indicated the book was a first edition printing and quite rare. Is this true? If so, are you perhaps able to inform me of the value? It is difficult to find people who are knowledgeable about books. Iโ€™ve tried several people, and they were unable to give me a value. Iโ€™m hoping you can help.ย

Iโ€™m sorry youโ€™ve been having difficultly establishing a current value for your book. That is what I am here for. To enlighten our readers as to the correct value of their special items and family heirlooms. The first detail I want to bring to your attention is the โ€œAntique Dealerโ€ that told you this book is a first edition is completely incorrect. It is not a first edition, nor is this book a first printing. How do I know this fact? A true first edition would have a capital letter โ€œAโ€ on the copyright page. Yours obviously does not. I do see that the original dust jacket is present, and the actual book has remained in very good condition. My experience with book collectors is that they are very fussy about the condition.ย  The dust jacket does show wear. That will detract from the value substantially. However, all is not lost. The saving grace for your book is the handwritten dedication and autograph signature of one of the twentieth (20th) centuryโ€™s greatest American novelists Ernest Hemingway (1899 – 1961). His autograph changes everything. If your book did not have this autograph dedication, it would have a value of $30.00 USD. However, it is my good pleasure to deliver some wonderful news to you. Your book, โ€œFOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS โ€˜โ€™ with the handwritten dedication and autographed signature of Ernest Hemingway is valued at $2,500.00 USD. Any bibliophile (a person who collects books), would certainly want your book in their collection. Not to mention it is a wonderful story to read. Enjoy the book and thank you for allowing me to appraise it for you.
