Rockland Symphony Orchestra Classical Delights Concert this Sunday

The Rockland Symphony Orchestra is pleased to invite audiences to our opening concert of the 2024 season. We will present a potpourri of โ€œClassical Delightsโ€ which will include some larger orchestral show-stoppers, under the baton of Conductor and Music Director Nicole Peragine. Here are brief notes on the music that we are presenting: ย

Bizet Overture to โ€˜Carmenโ€™, which includes such famous themes as the entrance of toreadors and Carmenโ€™s motif.

Mozart Molto Allegro from Symphony 40 in G minor, the opening movement in Mozartโ€™s next-to-last symphony.

Gershwin โ€˜Rhapsody in Blueโ€™, in which the orchestra celebrates the 100th anniversary of this iconic American work, with our special friend pianist Ron Levy as the soloist (Mr. Levy has performed with RSO regularly over the years, since first appearing as a teen-aged competition winner). Rhapsody in Blue, originally intended for piano soloist and concert band, will be played in Ferde Grofeโ€™s arrangement for full symphony orchestra. (An intermission will follow.)

Strauss Overture to the โ€˜Gypsy Baronโ€™ operetta, in which Hungarian Gypsy themes intermingle delightfully with Straussian Viennese waltzes.

Brahms Hungarian Dance No. 5 in G minor

Elgar โ€˜Nimrodโ€™ variation from his โ€˜Enigma Variationsโ€™.ย  This particularly lush variation was in honor of his friend Jaeger, the German word for hunter as is Nimrod in the Bible.

Marquez Danzon No. 2 โ€“ the most popular of a set of dances composed in 1994, both Cuban and Mexican rhythms and tunes are intermixed to create an exciting climax to any program. ย
