The County Executive’s Corner – Celebrating Human Rights and Unity in Rockland County

December holds special significance as Universal Human Rights Month, a time to honor the principles of dignity, equality, and freedom for all. This year, Rockland County reaffirmed its commitment to these ideals by proclaiming December as Universal Human Rights Month and hosting our annual Human Rights Interfaith Forum on International Human Rights Day, December 10th.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations in 1948, serves as a guiding light for justice and equity worldwide. It reminds us that the rights we cherish today were hard-won and must be continually defended. As a county known for its diversity, Rockland takes these principles to heart. We are home to people of many faiths, ethnicities and backgrounds, and this diversity enriches us all while reminding us of the work required to create an inclusive and respectful community.

This year’s Human Rights Interfaith Forum exemplified the power of unity. The event, held at our County’s Pomona health complex brought together residents, faith leaders and advocates to engage in meaningful dialogue about promoting justice and compassion in our community.

The event featured a keynote address was delivered by John Bonnici, Episcopal Vicar for Rockland and Westchester Counties, who highlighted the critical role faith communities play in addressing social challenges and fostering mutual respect.

The evening continued with a compelling fireside chat moderated by Emmy Award-winning journalist Tara Rosenblum of News 12 and a panel which featured Rabbi Ariel Russo of Congregation Sons of Israel in Nyack, Rev. Melvin Mungin of Rockland Ministerial Alliance and Imam Syed Ali of Masjid Darul Ehsan in Suffern.

As I listened to these remarkable individuals share their experiences and insights, I was reminded of the strength that lies in our diversity and the shared values that unite us. Faith, regardless of tradition, has always been a powerful force for good, inspiring action, compassion, and a commitment to justice.

Universal Human Rights Month is a reminder that the ideals of equality and dignity are not just abstract concepts—they are lived experiences. I am happy to share that I have officially proclaimed December as Universal Human Rights Month in Rockland County, to remind ourselves of our responsibility to one another, not just during this season but always.

I encourage all Rockland residents to reflect on how we can contribute to upholding these principles, whether by fostering dialogue, volunteering in our communities, or standing against injustice. Together, we can build a county that truly exemplifies the ideals enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Thank you to everyone who made this year’s forum a success and to all who continue to champion the cause of human rights. Rockland County is stronger because of your efforts, and I am proud to stand with you as we work toward a brighter, more inclusive future for all.
