My Advice To The Jets HC Search Party…

The 2024 Giants campaign that will go down as Wild Card Weekend just finished up in the NFL, itโ€™s been quite a while since the New York Jets had the opportunity to experience one of those.ย

Youโ€™d have to go all the way back to the 2010 season, January of 2011 to be exact.ย

Since that postseason, the Jets have the longest playoff drought in the NFL.ย

Iโ€™ll take it a step further, the Jets have the longest playoff drought in professional sports heading into 2025.ย

The Jets as a franchise have had plenty of GM and head coaching searches over the past few seasons.ย

Theyโ€™ve tried defensive minded head coaches like Todd Bowles and most recently Robert Saleh.ย

Didnโ€™t work.ย

They tried a retread offensive minded head coach, Adam Gase.ย

Epic disaster.ย

The Jets need to find a legitimate program builder to jumpstart a franchise that has known nothing but losing for quite some time.ย

If I were a part of the braintrust leading the coaching search, there are two absolute must qualifications that I would be looking for.ย

After watching Robert Saleh and then Jeff Ulbrich look overwhelmed at times with the duties of being a head coach, I would be prioritizing head coaching experience as a major qualification of the job.ย

This is usually not a must for me, because there are plenty of examples of organizationโ€™s giving an individual a chance and making the most of it.ย

However, the Jets are not the prototypical NFL situation.ย

When you factor in the magnitude of the market, the scrutiny and combine that with the lack of success over the last 15 years, itโ€™s simply not a job that to me is designed for a first timer.ย

I would want no questions about whether or not a certain someone is equipped to be a head coach.ย

The second element that is a must for me with this Jets job – You must be able to be a leader of men.ย

The Jets locker room has been fractured over the last few years. Poor quarterbacks, offense vs defense, Rodgers guys vs Non Rodgers guys have loomed over the locker room.

The Jets need a leader who can command and unite.ย

Robert Saleh looked the part in his press conference, but he did not deliver the sort of leadership at the helm that was necessary to succeed.ย

The Jets have done this way too many times over the past fifteen years, so you would think Woody Johnson would have experience with coaching searches.ย

If theyโ€™re looking for yet another voice to advise, I am happy to help.ย

Find a leader and find one who has experience.ย

Mike McCarthy and Brian Flores on line 1 and 2.ย

Weโ€™ll see if the Jets share my vision for their next leader.ย
